The high throughput demands of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), along with diversity in product and impurity profiles for mAbs and other classes of protein and non-protein biologics is putting significant pressure on downstream bioprocessing technology development. Further, after a period of stagnation, the field is experiencing a dramatic renascence in new technology development for both the recovery and purification of biological products. This includes novel technologies for flocculation, non-chromatographic recovery processes, new classes of ligands for both affinity capture and high-resolution chromatographic purification of product variants, continuous bioprocessing and the a-priori design of biological products for biomanufacturing. This presentation will review the latest advances in the field along with a projection of where academic research needs to go in the future to address the urgent demands of the industry.
