Due to the ongoing threat of biological and chemical attack, methods for detection of small molecules and environmental agents are at the forefront of chemical research.  Previous research has been directed at the production of sensors for use in these detection devices. Recent discoveries however, indicate that nanoparticles, specifically gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), show great promise for use as sensors. Herein, we describe a strategy that affords functionalization of AuNPs through a thiol-mediated linkage. Moreover, once in place the linker, which possesses a latent azide group, can be efficiently affixed to compound 1  via the well-established �Click� reaction.  Compound 1  is attractive because the tripodal nature of the molecule allows for interchangeable connection of molecular recognition features by way of the �Click� reaction while simultaneously further linking other functional groups such as a-bromoamide or maleimide.  These groups are utilized as receptive functionalities that enable molecular recognition features (such as mini-proteins or peptides) to be incorporated to bind to specific targets such as DNA. ?                                                                         ?
