The conformational preferences of furanosides are better understood than they once were, but there is much we still don't know.  We are examining permethylated furanosides, minimally substituted tetrahydrofurans and perfluorinated analogues using ring potential energy surface scanning to better describe their conformational preferences.  The compounds are then synthesized so that the 3JH,H coupling constants can be compared to those predicted by theoretical methods. Initial measured coupling constants are in good agreement with calculated values.
