Gas-liquid scattering experiments provide a means to investigate energy transfer, solvation, and interfacial reactions under controlled conditions. The experiments may be extended to liquids with vapor pressures of one Torr or more by utilizing narrow-diameter liquid jets in vacuum. These high vapor pressure liquids include hydrocarbon fuels and aqueous salt solutions. We are presently using the microjet method to explore the evaporation of gases such as He and H2 and collisions of gases ranging from Ne and O2 to HCl and F2. Our initial studies of Ne and O2 collisions with dodecane (0.1 Torr vapor pressure) indicate that these species undergo direct scattering and thermal accommodation in ways that are similar to longer chain and lower vapor pressure liquids. We also find that He atoms evaporate at high velocities from dodecane and ethylene glycol, suggesting that in the reverse process these atoms ballistically dissolve into each liquid. Future experiments with HCl an F2 will be used to investigate interfacial acid dissociation and �explosive� halogen exchange with dissolved halide ions.
