(Poly)phenols, which are abundant in tea, berries, and chocolate, were recently shown to form thin adherent films on substrates through spontaneous adsorption from solution. The resulting coatings were shown to form on virtually any substrate through a dip-coating process. The modified surfaces displayed many properties that are celebrated in soluble phenolic compounds, including antioxidant and antibacterial behavior. Thus far, two molecules were used to form these coatings. This presentation will discuss the search for other phenolic molecules capable of forming tannin-inspired nanoscale adlayers during a dip-coating process. This sweep identified four new molecules that can form analogous thin films. Similarities in structure and phenolic acidity of starting materials were found to be independent of the optimal coating conditions for these compounds. As before, the final coatings were shown to possess antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The continued exploration of these materials is expected to support their use as novel surface treatments for materials as varied as medical implants, food, and filtration devices.
