The immobilized systems increase cell stability and allow the reuse of the support in addition to easier separation of the product. The support has an important influence on the effectiveness of the process and it selection has been directed towards the use of industrial by-products such as sugarcane bagasse, considered for its accessibility and low price. The purpose of this investigation was to immobilize the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae ITV-01 RD in sugarcanne bagasse for ethanol production in a packed bed column.The inoculum size for yeast immobilization was evaluated and the data were adjusted using the model Guggenheim.Andersen-de Boer (GAB). The stability was tested by repeated batch fermentations and then evaluated the effect of the dilution rate on ethanol production in packed bed column.Regarding the effect of the inoculum size of the tested concentrations from 0.25 to 10 gL-1 was selected inoculum of 5� 0.5 gL-1 this retention was reached 80�4 mgg-1 with an efficiency of 58% of adhered cells to the support. In a further analysis based on the results of the evaluation of inoculum size, the data were fitted to the GAB Model obtaining an adjustment of R2 = 0.85. Later to determine the stability of the immobilization was measured yeast metabolic activity while the carrier was reused up to 20 batches. Twenty-ninth through batch production of ethanol remained constant at 60 gL-1 so that immobilization is considered stable. In the packed column reactor, the effect of the dilution rate on ethanol production (0.11, 0.21, 0.32 and 0.48 h-1) concluding that the dilution rate of 0.11 h-1 was tested obtaining the best 98% Conversion of glucose and ethanol production of 48 gL-1 and a productivity of 5.1 gL-1h-1.The strategy proposed in this study offers the possibility of being used in fermentation technologies for biofuel production.
