Among the numerous mechanisms proposed for the formation process of solid electrolyte interphase, the �3D model� that was originally developed by Besenhard and Winter based on ternary GIC preceding SEI have been recognized as the closest to reality, while evidences from various experimental approaches both confirmed and further enriched this mechanism. One important concept introduced was how solvation sheath structure of Li+ dictates the chemistry of the SEI and the subsequent transport processes across it. This talk will summarize the newest findings, both from us and other researchers, that further link this bulk solution property with the interphasial chemistry and process.
