The ordering and orientation of molecules in the first monolayers of organic field-effect transistors can have a profound impact on their performance.  Experimentally characterizing these molecules requires a surface selective technique such as vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy.  In this talk, recent results from our group will be described using this approach to monitor the structural changes that occur at interfaces in thin films of P3HT during a thermal annealing procedure.  We show that the chemistry of the interface has a direct influence on the outcome of the annealing treatment, and that hydrophobic interfaces avoid kinetic trapping during deposition.  In addition, the challenges of temperature dependent studies on this system will be discussed along with some of the solutions to these obstacles that have been developed in our lab.
