In this talk I will describe the synthesis and reactivity of bis(imino)pyridine complexes of aluminum(III). A pseudo square planar aluminum(III) hydride complex mediates the heterolytic cleavage of polar X-H bonds (where X = N or O). This bond activation chemistry initiates catalytic dehydrognation reactions of amines to form imines and of formic acid to afford CO2 and H2. Other examples of unusual reactivity will also be described.
