Hydrogen from electrolysis is gaining strong interest in Europe and other areas with high renewable energy penetration because of hydrogen's dispatchability and flexibility in serving multiple value streams (Figure 1).  Electrolysis systems using proton exchange membrane (PEM)-based cells provide advantages over liquid KOH systems in efficiency, safety, and maintenance.  Proton OnSite has established a profitable business in PEM electrolysis for industrial applications, with systems that are market competitive in price and performance.  Advancing this technology to the scale and performance targets required for energy applications requires competencies in a broad range of areas including polymers, catalysts, metallurgy, carbon, fluid and stress modeling, advanced manufacturing and system integration.  A key to success involves integrating technical advancements from these multiple areas into a synergistic design.
