Ion-exchange membranes are playing a crucial role in industrial processes such as electrodialysis and energy conversion and storage. In this talk, the electro- and magneto-induced ion trans-membrane transport through graphene oxide (G-O) membranes is investigated for the first time, which reveals that the electric field can either increase or decrease the ion transport through G-O membranes depending on its direction while the magnetic field can enhance the ion penetration monotonically. Significant membrane separation occurs when electric field is applied across G-O membrane while it is absent in the presence of magnetic field. In addition, the AES (Auger electron spectroscopy) results demonstrate the excellent cation-permselectivity of G-O membranes. The mechanism for the electro- and magneto-modulated ion transport through G-O membranes is investigated, demonstrating that the electric fields dominate the ion migration process while the magnetic fields alter the internal structure of G-O membranes. Finally, the electro- and magneto-induced transport properties of hybrid electrolytes through G-O membranes are studied, revealing that the ion selectivity of G-O membranes can be tuned by the electric fields while the transport of ions can be enhanced synchronously by the magnetic fields. These properties make G-O membranes suitable for the application as ion-exchange membranes in electrodialysis and maybe in �magnetodialysis�.
