Partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas, as one of the important routes for methane utilization, has attracted the attentions of scientists due to its obvious advantages, such as high energy efficiency, suitable H2/CO ratio for methanol synthesis and Fischer�Tropsch processes. Ni-based catalysts have been most widely studied in POM due to their cheaper prices as well as the comparable catalytic performances with noble metals-based catalysts. However, Ni-based catalysts have been suffered from deactivation owing to carbon deposition and the sintering of Ni during the reaction. It has been reported that the acidic-basic properties of Ni-based catalysts could affect the amount of carbon deposited on catalysts during POM.Previous studies of our group showed that, employing basic oxide Y2O3 as the support of Ni catalyst, the prepared Ni/Y2O3 catalyst exhibited relatively high catalytic activity and strong ability to resist carbon deposition in the reaction of partial oxidation of methane. In this work, we try to employ different methods to prepare Y2O3 and the relevant Ni/Y2O3 catalysts. The results showed that, Y2O3 prepared by both conventional precipitation method (short for Y2O3-CP) and alcohol gel-N2 calcination method (short for Y2O3-AN) were of cubic phase. Ni particles were well dispersed on both catalysts, and they exhibited two reduction peaks which could be attributed to the reductions of bulk NiO and NiO strongly interacted with supports. Yet, the interactions between NiO and Y2O3-AN were a little stronger. CO2-TPD showed that, Ni/Y2O3-CP possessed more basic sites while the strength of basic sites on Ni/Y2O3-AN were somewhat stronger. In partial oxidation of methane, the two Ni/Y2O3 catalysts exhibited similar initial catalytic activities, whereas in the long time stability test, Ni/Y2O3-AN was stable while Ni/Y2O3-CP deactivated severely.
