The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the catalytic production of nitric oxide (NO) from S-nitrosothiols (RSNOs) has recently been realized.  However, frameworks were shown to be incompatible with aqueous media.  We report the use of MOF H3[(Cu4Cl)3(BTTri)8] (H3BTTri = 1,3,5-tris(1H-1,2,3-triazol-5-yl)benzene) as a catalyst for the production of NO from biologically available S-nitrosocysteamine in a simulated physiological medium of aqueous phosphate buffered saline (PBS).  Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) reveals the crystalline MOF structure to remain intact subsequent to 72 hr boling H2O, 48 hr PBS, as well as 12 hr PBS/RSNO exposure.  Inductively coupled plasma (ICP) studies were also conducted to monitor the extent of copper leaching from the structure.
