The promotional effect of H2 on the CO oxidation continues to be an intriguing subject for the scientific community and evaluating its effect during operando can help in optimizing the overall efficiency of a catalytic converter since it is considered to be a clean fuel and already present in the exhaust gas of diesel engines. However, common 'end-pipe' analyses cannot provide information on aspects such as reaction pathways, intermediates and hydrodynamic parameters within monolith channels. In the present work, SpaciMS was used to investigate the oxidation of CO in the absence and presence of small amounts of H2 on a vehicle aged Pd/Al2O3 washcoated monolith. Thin fused silica capillaries, connected to a mass spectrometer and thin thermocouples spatially distributed within the monolith were used to generate spatially resolved maps of the reactions.The SpaciMS measurements emphasized the dramatic impact that small quantities of hydrogen have on the conversion of CO within a real catalytic converter by displacing the reaction front from the last quarter of the monolith upstream, to its first mm, as shown in figure 1. Furthermore, valuable information regarding the presence/location of the temperature maxima inside the catalyst and how it behaves during operation were obtained from the spatiotemporal profiles. The temperature maps and the chemical profiles indicated that both a thermal and chemical effect should be taken into consideration.
