Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) has been used to study magnetic excitations in metalloporphyrins [MIII(TPP)Cl] (M = Mn, Cr; TPP = tetraphenylporphytin) and [MnII(TPP)] at the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Inelastically scattered neutrons transfer energy to molecules in the sample of each compound, leading to transitions between the energy levels.  Zero field splitting parameters D for these complexes have been obtained. The work shows that magnetic excitations below ~30 cm-1 could be determined using non-deuterated samples.
