A solid-state mechanochemical approach has been investigated as a solvent-free synthetic route for metal allyl complexes of electropositive metals with sterically demanding allyl ligands. Compounds of the form A'xM (A�= [1,3-(SiMe3)2C3H3]�) are traditionally synthesized by salt metathesis in ethereal solvents (e.g., Et2O, THF). The use of such ethers can often lead to products containing coordinated solvent molecules that are not always subsequently removable, either in whole or in part. The presence of such solvents may limit product reactivity, influence binding modes of the bulky allyls, or even redirect reaction pathways, so that desired products do not form. The synthesis and characterization of A'xM complexes formed in the absence of reaction solvent will be described.
