Conversion of biomass to fuels is a priority because there is potential to provide a sustainable domestic source for a significant portion US energy demand.  However, catalytic upgrading of primary bio-oils is needed to produce usable molecules from biomass. Nanoscale metal oxides have shown promise in several upgrading reactions for producing transportation fuels and valuable petrochemicals from biomass. However, metal oxides have been shown to degrade in the presence of water resulting in decreased reactivity and recyclability.  If metal oxides are coated with a hydrophobic layer of carbon, it can prevent the catalyst being degraded by water.  The carbon coated catalysts reported in this poster show improved stability and recyclability for biofuel production.
