This project studied the rheological effects that nanoparticle additives had on drilling fluid. With the addition of components that were nanometer in size, the project looked to determine if there was a significant change in the viscosity, density, or fluid loss of the drilling fluid.Using a base drilling fluid that had easily measureable qualities with the addition of nanoparticle additives that varied in size, quantity, and composition, field equipment, such as a rotational viscometer, mud density balance, and filter press, was used to measure the qualities that were of importance to the study.It was determined upon the completion of the project that size, quantity, and composition were all factors in changing the properties of the base drilling fluid. As the quantity of any of the nanoparticles that were tested increased, so did the viscosity of the drilling fluid. There was no change in the density of the drilling fluid with the addition of any of the nanoparticles that were tested. And it was determined that some of the additives increased the fluid loss, while others decreased the fluid loss. Detailed results of the study will be the subject of the presentation.
