Boron- and silicon-containing molecules are important compounds not only as synthetic intermediates for the synthesis of complex natural products but also in medicine and materials science. Hence, methods for their synthesis are valuable. We recently developed a user and environmentally friendly protocol for the synthesis of �-borylated and �-silylated carbonyl compounds. Using catalytic amounts of copper and amine base, bis(pinacolato)diboron or dimethylphenylsilylpinacolborane, and a,�-unsaturated carbonyls as substrate in water and open to the atmosphere at room temperature, the desired products are isolated in high yield and good to excellent stereoselectivity. Studies toward understanding the mechanism and origin of stereoselectivity along with the application in synthesis will be discussed.
