Carbon ions (C+) in the form of cosmic rays are able to penetrate deeply into cold interstellar clouds. While a number of gas phase reactions of C+ with common astromolecules have been characterized�such as H2O, CH4, NH3, and C2H2�reactions on icy grain surfaces are also of interest, and are likely proceed along different pathways than gas phase reactions. In this presentation, we will compare the behavior of the C+ + H2O reaction in the gas phase and the C+ + nH2O reaction in ice with molecular orbital and density functional theory calculations.
