The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has been charged with the discovery and development of new anti-cancer therapeutics since 1955. The structure of this program has changed numerous times over the past 63 years to meet the needs of the oncology field and most recently involved the creation of the Chemical Biology Consortium (CBC) as the discovery engine of the NCI's Experimental Therapeutics (NExT) Program. The CBC was created to increase the flow of early stage drug candidates into the development pipeline of NExT. The creation of the CBC enables the NCI to focus on unmet needs in oncology such as Natural Products, rare malignances and undruggable targets by establishing an integrated network of chemists, chemical biologists and molecular oncologists from government, academia and the drugindustry. This consortium is designed to significantly enhance the interactions among the participants leading to a more robust pipeline in the NExT Program from target validation through drug development and proof of concept (POC) Phase 0 and I clinical trials.
