Applying the principles outlined for green chemistry will allow us to make better use of our limited natural resources. Improving overall reaction efficiency and selectivity can reduce wastes. Numerous methods of allylic or benzylic oxidation using vanadium or chromium (VI) catalysts have been investigated; however, selectivity remains elusive and their application is complicated by harsh reaction conditions. We have previously reported a 2-quinoxalinol salen ligand (�salqu�) as a catalyst support for Cu(II).The salqu copper complexes have been shown to have an increased catalytic efficacy as compared to simple copper salts or analogous copper salophen complexes in the oxidation of aryl methylenes or simple olefins. Here, we have introduced a sulfonated 2-quinoxalinol salen (sulfosalqu) and characterized this as an efficient catalyst in combination with tert-butyl hydroperoxide for the selective oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds.
