The details of the Pd-catalysed sulfination mechanism will be discussed. Special attention will be given to the activation of Pd-N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysts and how they are kept on cycle from potentially terminal resting states. The role of the base beyond a Bronsted partner in this reaction will be elucidated. Finally, the systematic development of a highly-reactive NHC pre-catalyst will be outlined. This effort has led to one of the most reactive systems for sulfination under the most mild conditions (e.g., room temperature) over a broad spectrum of strongly deactivated oxidative addition and thiol coupling partners.
