Room-temperature ionic liquids are liquids completely composed of ions without solvents. The system is completely composed of charged species and the consequence of this situation results in unique chemistry at the interface with various materials. This presentation will be mostly concerned with ionic liquids in contact with charged solid surfaces such as metal electrodes, salts crystals, and graphene. Further studies with explore the vibrational Stark shift of CO adsorbed on platinum electrodes as a function of the ionic liquid and in mixtures with acetonitrile. To investigate these systems nonlinear surface vibrational spectroscopy (sum frequency generation, SFG) is used. SFG is able to determine the species at the surface as well as the orientational ordering. Through these studies it has been deduced that most ionic liquid/surface systems contain ions that are the counter charge to the solid surface charge state and are organized essentially into a simple Helmholtz electrical double layer in most cases.
