While the first generation of carbon capture solvents is being tested at the large-scale, the next generations of capture materials must be developed to ensure greater performance, especially from a thermodynamic standpoint. Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs) represent one of these new solvents for CO2 capture. These liquid-like nanomaterials are formed by grafting polymer chains onto an inorganic nanocore, which ensures both thermal stability and negligible vapor pressure, two of the key features of ideal CO2 capture solvents. Additionally, NOHMs exhibit some degree of physical and chemical tunability via modification of the core and/or polymeric canopy. This presentation will highlight the essential properties of NOHMs in regard to their utilization for CO2 capture, i.e. thermal stability, viscosity, heat capacity, CO2 diffusivity, CO2 capture capacity and swelling. Special attention will be given to the effect of chemical and structural modifications on the NOHMs' properties. The potential use of NOHMs as electrolyte for CO2 conversion will be discussed as well.
