CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas, and an increase in its quantity in the atmosphere due to the combustion of fossil fuels can cause substantial changes in global climate. Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) is the key option for mitigating CO2 emissions. However, the innovative technologies which can be applied for reduction the cost of CCS have to be developed. With many advantages comparing with other capture methods such as (i) lower energy required for sorbents regeneration, (ii) no equipment corrosion, and (iii) high adsorption-desorption rate, the amine solid sorbents have been considered as one of the promising techniques for CO2 capture. In this work, mesostructured cellular form silica (MSU-F), a silica material with large pore size, good interconnections between pore channels, and good thermal stability, was used as the support for the impregnation of solid sorbents for CO2 capture using diethanolamine (DEA) blended with some amines including tetraethylenpentamine (TEPA), pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA), and branched polyethyleneimine (PEI). The effect of hydroxyl groups, amine amino groups, and impregnating amine composite solutions on the CO2 adsorption performance were investigated and discussed. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the amine solid sorbents was enhanced by the synergistic effect between hydroxyl groups and polyamines in the pores of silica support, which suggested that hydroxyl groups had the positive effects on the CO2 adsorption capacity. The ratio of the primary amino groups to the secondary and tertiary amino groups was also an important factor that influenced the CO2 adsorption capacity. An excellent solid sorbent which prepared by the impregnation of MSU-F with the mixture of TEPA 40 wt% and DEA 30 wt% showed the highest adsorption capacity of 5.6 mmol/g at 40 oC and under the pressure of 100 kPa.
