A structural component of many antibiotics, including the well-known penicillin, beta lactams are capable of breaking down bacterial cell walls. Isopenicillin N Synthase (IPNS), a non-heme iron enzyme, is a well-studied protein responsible for bioorganic synthesis of beta lactams. Recent efforts in our lab focus on the role the Fe center plays, in coordination with the protein environment, to facilitate catalytic formation of beta lactams by IPNS. Our most current results from this work will be presented.
