We have been developing hybrid extraction process using green solvent which is mixed fluid of scCO2 and liquid water (1-3). scCO2 and water flow counter-currently through the extractor containing sold feed material. Non-polar and polar compounds are extracted into scCO2 phase and water phase, respectively. scCO2 could be continuous phase whereas water could be dispersed phase and vice versa. We have demonstrated the hybrid process for the extraction of chlorogenic acid and caffeine from green coffee beans (2). The effectiveness of the process was also shown by the simulation using mathematical model. We have also applied the hybrid process for the recovery of phytochemicals from citrus fruit peels, which includes four processes: 1) Extraction using scCO2. 2) Extraction using of high-pressure hot water with/without scCO2. 3) Hybrid extraction using scCO2 and water, 4) Hydrothermal reaction to upgrade the components. After citrus juice processing, essential oils are extracted effectively with scCO2 from the fruit peel. The essential oil may be further fractionated for the deterpenation of oil by using counter-current scCO2 extractor. The hybrid extraction process is useful for the separation of hydrophilic flavonoids (hesperidin) and hydrophobic flavonoids (tangeretine, nobiretine) from citrus peel. After removal of the flavonoid components, operation temperature may be increased to isolate saccharides, such as pectin. The extracted hesperidin was further converted by hydrothermal reaction into more valuable components. We have also been applying the hybrid extraction process for various natural materials.
