Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) comprising and increasingly important class of hybrid organic-inorganic materials.  Their regular structure, tunability, and high porosity have made them attractive compounds for a wide range of proposed applications.  In this presentation, the use of 'crosslinked' ligands will be described to prepare a new subclass of MOFs.  The ligands string together, using either rigid or flexible bridges, mulitple coordinating units, such as simple terephthalic acid building blocks.  Despite the linker constraints, the majority of these systems readily assemble into predictable MOF frameworks.  The advantages, limitations, and prospects of MOFs based on crosslinked ligands will be discussed.  The possible convergence of MOF and polymer chemistry via this approach will also be described.
