Learning the chemistry of carbonyl groups is difficult due to a convolution of multiple possible reaction sites, the different order of presentation in comprehensive introductory organic chemistry textbooks, and factual inaccuracies in those texts. These inconsistencies necessitate a systematic comparison of the textbooks with respect to presentation order, accuracy in usage of electron arrow pushing, and other related characteristics. In order to facilitate solving carbonyl chemistry problems and understanding the topic, a summary sheet and a decision tree are also provided. Consistent, descriptive and pedagogically useful recommendations are made, which could remedy existing discrepancies in the texts. Results of comparisons and subsequent recommendations will be presented and discussed in order to improve the learning experiences of students.
