Solvent and cations have been shown to affect the stereochemistry outcome of reactions involving nitrile anion containing molecules. Unfortunately, how the solvent and cations influence the stereochemistry of those molecules is not well understood. Specifically, the methylation of 2-methyl-cyclopentanecarbonitrile in dimethyl ether and THF with a single lithium cation present is used as a model system. The application of Terachem, QChem, and Molecular Operating Environment (MOE) software was used to simulate how this nitrile anion will react in a solvation sphere of dimethyl ether and THF. The reaction was simulated using the Becke, three-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) model chemistry alongside the 6-31+G basis set. Details of the QMD simulations for this reaction and preliminary data will be presented.
