Various metallacrowns (MC) have shown single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in the past including manganese-only 12-MC-4 complexes.  Lanthanide and alkali metal containing 12-MC-4 compounds will be used as a framework to synthesize complexes with potential SMM behavior.  The alkali metal and bridging carboxylate anion of the structure will be varied, and the resultant structural and magnetic properties of these compounds will be explored.  By varying one part of the structure at a time, differences in magnetic behavior can be attributed to the individual alkali metal or bridging carboxylate anion in question.  Incorporating different alkali metal ions into the central cavity of the MC will affect the planarity of the overall structure.  SMM behavior may result from certain structures produced by the central cavity alkali metal and from a select range of pKa values of the various bridging carboxylate anions.  The syntheses, single-crystal structures, and magnetic properties will be reported for the 12-MC-4 complexes.
