The o-phenylenediamine-derived thioamide ligand (C20H16N2S2) 1  is known to be a successful Pb(II) extractant from water into an organic phase via ion-exchange. In this study, the synthesis of 1  was scaled-up and optimized (55% yield vs. 12%). The Cd(II) complex of 1  was successfully synthesized and characterized (61% yield). This complex showed structural resemblance to the Pb(II) complex of 1  previously synthesized, with a 1:2 metal to ligand ratio. Based on the UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis and the isosbestic point obtained, it is shown that 1 is forming the complex upon Cd(II) extraction. Addition of excess zinc to a thioamide solution, gave the analogous Zn(II) complex. Structural and spectroscopic characterization of the metal complexes is expected to reveal coordination similarities and differences. *  REU participant BV was supported by the NSF-REU Site grant No: CHE1156886 to FIU  (PI K.
