From a series of previous mechanistic studies on arylalkenyl platinum(II) complexes [Pt(PNP)(CH=CHAr)]+ (PNP = 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) a catalytic system for a selective intermolecular alkyne hydroarylation reaction has been developed. In the presence of the platinum(II) complex and stoichiometric amount of tetrafluoroboric acid as co-catalysts 5 turnovers were observed for the addition of pentamethylbenzene to acetylene at room temperature within 24 hours. In order to optimize the catalytic activity, further parameters have been studied: the catalyst concentration, co-ligand, counter anion, and the amount of acid co-catalyst. The catalytic system has been applied to different alkyne and arene substrates.
