Synthesis of mixed metal chalcogenide nanoparticles can by hindered by a tendency for species to segregate into binary phases, particularly when the metals have disparate sizes, charges, and chalcogenide affinities. We hypothesize that the solution synthesis of such mixed metal chalcogenides can by altered by utilization of designed additives that modulate reaction rates for the two metal species. Presented here is an investigation of the effect of various solution species on the relative incorporation of copper, iron, and aluminum species into a sulfide matrix. Phases have been examined using powder X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, and ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared spectroscopy.
