We have developed an alternative synthetic method to N, N'-bis(3,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane, an organic molecule with two catechol functional groups that can serve as a ligand for discrete metal complexes or can bridge metal centers to form coordination polymers.  The two-step synthesis of N, N'-bis(3,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane will be described along with the various metal complexation reactions (traditional, microwave, and solvothermal methods) with Co(II), Cu(II), and Fe(III) ions.  Characterization (IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction) of the complexation products will also be presented.
