The synthesis of heteroleptic magnesium complexes containing one salicylaldiminate ligand and one halide ligand and homoleptic magnesium complexes with two salicylaldiminate ligands have been explored using standard Schlenk techniques. The products have been characterized via 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. It was determined that sterics of the substituent groups plays a role in the solid state structure. In solution however, a Schlenk-type equilibrium is seen between the homoleptic and heteroleptic complexes. Heteroleptic complexes capable of being isolated were then investigated as precursors for stable cationic complexes via halide abstraction. Reported here are a series of neutral and cationic magnesium complexes. Initial studies into the use of these complexes as initiators of ring-opening polymerization of lactide are detailed.
