A Schiff-base Nickel(II) complex has been synthesized, characterized and purified via crystallization.  It is soluble in polar organic solvents (acetonitrile and acetone) and water; however, upon dissolution in water, the solution is blue rather than yellow.  Yellow solutions in organic solvents rapidly become blue if water is added.  The reaction does not appear to be reversible.  The complex is thermally unstable, in the presence of air, decomposing just above room temperature.  We report the electronic spectrum and structural details of both the yellow and blue forms the complex, as well as the results of the reaction with various oxidants and reductants.  The rate law of the reaction of the yellow form with water is presented, and various mechanisms are discussed.
