Solid state structures of salicyladiminato magnesium complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Their stability in solution when exposed to donor and non-donor solvents has been studied.  Heteroleptic magnesium complexes containing one salicylaldiminate ligand and one hexamethyldisilazide ligand have been shown to exhibit Schlenk- like equilibrium in solution.  In attempts to minimize such ligand redistribution, salicyladiminato magnesium complexes containing amide ligands generated from substituted anilines have been synthesized and characterized.  It was concluded from X-ray diffraction data that these complexes were heteroleptic and exhibit decreased aggregation states as salicyladiminate sterics increase.  Solution studies using 1H-NMR spectroscopy also have shown minimal ligand redistribution with these systems.
