In an effort to create a reusable material to alleviate the ill effects of abandoned mine drainage (AMD), several ferrous iron complexes were prepared with 1,10-phenanthroline based compounds and removed from aqueous solution through liquid-liquid extraction. 1,10-phenanthroline and symmetrically substituted derivatives were complexed with iron (II) sulfate solution and samples from Saint Vincent College's Wetland. The complex was then extracted from aqueous solution using liquid-liquid extraction to study how substitutions made to phenanthroline affect the complexes formation and its extractability from solution. The resulting data can be used in a future study to develop a reusable phenanthroline based polymer to filter ferrous iron from AMD.
