A series of thiocyanato complexes of Zn(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) with quinoxaline has been prepared. The fundamental mid and far range IR vibrational modes of SCN� (?CN, dNCS, and ?CS), coupled with 13C NMR chemical shifts have been utilized to distinguish between the three most common coordination modes of this ambidentate ligand, M-N terminal, M-S terminal and M-NCS-M bridging as well as molecular geometries. X-ray crystallographic and fluorescence studies are underway and will also be reported.
