Derivatives of the 1-carba-closo-dodecaborate(1-) carborane anion (closo-CB11) have potential uses that include pharmaceuticals, catalysts for chemical industry, and optical and electronic materials. However, the adoption of these molecules in practical applications has been hindered, in part, by the limited number of efficient synthetic techniques for preparing useful derivatives of the closo-CB11 cluster. Microwave-assisted reactions represent a promising strategy for expanding the synthetic chemistry of closo-CB11. Our investigation in this area has led to several new compounds, including the first examples of closo-CB11 bearing cyano and carboxylate groups on boron vertices (Rosenbaum, A.R., Juers, D. H. Juhasz, M. A., Inorg. Chem. 2013 , 52, 10717-9).  Studies of the reactivity of these cyanated compounds and a discussion of the microwave-assisted syntheses of other closo-CB11-based molecules will be presented.
