The preparation of novel lanthanide dicyanoaurate structure types is performed through incorporation of triphenylphosphine oxide (TPPO) ligands.  TPPO eliminates the metal to metal interactions seen in the lanthanide dicyanoaurate structures.  One of the properties of lanthanides is the high number of coordination sites available for ligand bonding.  Dicyanoaurates have already been shown to be highly luminescent and also efficient donors for intramolecular energy transfer with select lanthanides.  In this project, a variety of lanthanide ions with varying sizes and energy levels are utilized.  The general structural formula for one class of compounds synthesized thus far is [Ln(Au(CN)?2)??]?3[OP(C6H5)3]4 (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb).  This structure type is seen with the larger lanthanides and is anhydrous, which is rare for lanthanide compounds.  Another structure type seen with the smaller lanthanides such as Er and Yb is [Ln((OP(C6H5)3)4(NO3)2][Au(CN)2].  The main difference between these structure types is that the the dicyanoaurate is bound to the lanthanide in the first structure and completely uncoordinated in the second structure.  Details of the structural and photoluminescence properties will be presented.
