The studies of numerous extended series of lanthanide open frameworks demonstrated that the choice of the anionic entities dictates the structural properties of the  products obtained. For instance, the incorporation of small purely inorganic anions in such frameworks produces highly rigid crystal lattices with very limited pore sizes that often alleviate increasing strain, due to decreasing ionic radii towards the heavier Ln-elements, via rearrangement of the crystal lattice.In order to increase pore sizes and functionalities of the targeted materials we began to incorporate various organic spacer units, such as terephthalic acid, glutaric acid and their derivatives, etc.The integration of one such entity usually results in crystalline materials whose single X-ray crystal structures can be determined for an extended series. Due to increased space availability and a certain degree of flexibility provided by these types of ligands, this allows for the creation of isostructural extended series of corresponding lanthanide complexes. Thus, these ligands usually prevent profound strain buildup onto the crystal lattice. The most recent attempts to combine two or more of these ligand systems and their derivatives indicated, however, that only very few targeted complexes can be obtained from very specific lanthanide elements, rather than an extended series.
