It is now clearly established that weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) are not always innocent bystanders in catalysis. The possible establishment of non-covalent interactions between the WCA and the ligands (Figure 1, A ), the metal (B ), the substrate (C ), the metal and the substrate (D ) � can dramatically affect the selectivity. Thus, knowing where the anion actually lies during the catalytic process is of prime importance.The second issue concerns the compatibility between the cationic moiety and the anion. Not every WCA is stable towards its cationic counterpart and may decompose into acidic species that can interfere with the desired catalytic process.This presentation will deal with the structures and the decomposition pathways of catalytically active ion pairs in the presence of organic substrates. The selected examples are in relation to stereoselective palladium-, rhodium-, iridium-, gold-, and gallium-catalyzed reactions.
