The GC monitoring of greenhouse gases is a challenging task because of the low concentration (range of ppm to ppb) of organic species such as methane and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Since methane is highly volatile compound, it cannot be efficiently monitored using conventional methods. Moreover, both methane and CFCs contributes highly towards global warming potential in comparison with carbon-di-oxide. Hence it is very essential to monitor the emission of these greenhouse gases. In an effort to develop effective greenhouse gas monitor, the performance of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as an effective sorbent for a microtrap designed for methane and chlorofluorocarbons preconcentration was studied. Its performance was compared to other commercially available carbon based sorbents, and it was found to be the most effective sorbent in terms of breakthrough volume and enthalpy of adsorption. Incorporation into a portable GC system leads to an effective greenhouse gas monitor. Further the performance of functionalized carbon nanotubes were also studied in comparison with other sorbents.
