Filming amines are added to feedwater in cooling water systems to coat and protect surfaces against corrosion but they can have an impact on the properties and performance of polishing ion exchange resins. Two commercial filming amines and two other amines were used in order to investigate the effect of exposure on two types of cation exchange resins and one anion exchange resin.  The properties of the resins in standard, exposed and regenerated forms were measured; LCMS, fluorometric analysis and salt splitting experiments were performed as well. The results indicated that the cation exchange resins absorbed higher amounts of filming amines as compared to the anion exchange resin. In all cases a decrease in exchange capacity was observed and it was not possible to recover resin properties completely after regeneration. LCMS and fluorescence results confirmed the absorption of amines and their presence when they were regenerated.
