The preparation and characterization of a series of substituted monomers for a candidate for electrical or NLO materials (I) is presented. The parent polymer has been previously prepared by Meador, et.al. at the NASA Glenn Research Center. This paper hopes to show the preparation of analogs with better physical properties. Beginning with simple p-substituted phenols [R = -CH2CH3, -C(CH3)3, -C(CH3)2CH2C(CH3)3], the core of each monomer is constructed by methylation, then bromination and subsequent Grignard formation followed by condensation with terephthalonitrile. Demethylation yields a diphenol that is polymerized with p-xylylidene dibromide. Comparative properties of the synthetic intermediates is presented, along with attempted characterization of the polymeric products.
