This paper will give an overview of how undergraduate research in the sciences and engineering curriculum in general, and in chemistry in particular is viewed and practiced in various countries.  The study will focus on best practices, some of the outcomes, challenges and opportunities associated with pursuing a curriculum where undergraduate research is emphasized.  Global funding opportunities for undergraduate research will be briefly presented.   Recommendations for students, faculty and academic administrators to build sustainable undergraduate research programs in their institutions and the value of such an investment will also be discussed.  The discussion will be based on the authors own experiences in involving students in research projects over the past 16 years at Penn State University, will be highlighted.  One of the authors will also share his experiences in involving undergraduate students in research at institutions in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE.
