Discourse analysis can be a powerful tool for conducting research in chemistry education. However, using discourse analysis requires significant planning for data collection and thought in analyzing the data.   We will present a general introduction to discourse analysis, including potential analytical frameworks and considerations for collecting and analyzing data. Examples of how discourse analysis has been used in chemistry education research are used to illustrate the types of questions and analyses that have been used to examine teaching and learning in the classroom.
